NEWS ARCHIVE ( 2006 - 2009)

12/06 /09 - Classic Bloodstock prepared, MSW BLACK HILLS scored in the $200,000 Zia Park Distance Championship Handicap. He was well off the pace until the quarter pole and then was forced to zig zag through traffic to get up to surge clear in deep stretch. Earlier he won the New Mexico State Fair Handicap Stakes in Albuquerque and before that the $100,000 San Juan Commissioner's Handicap also in New Mexico. The dark bay colt by Judge TC is out of the Tactical Advantage mare Little Sioux. BLACK HILLS was a $20,000 yearling purchase for Classic Bloodstock. He has a special place in our hearts as he overcame a terrible sickness before becoming first a top allowance horse in California, and then a stakes star in New Mexico. Congratulations to all of the connections of BLACK HILLS, and especially to Jeff Metz, agent for Class Racing Stable who loved him at first sight.

11/21/09 - What an exciting day for Classic Bloodstock!

Make History, the Empire Maker colt we sold to Sovereign Stable, while retaining a portion, ran a HUGE debut race and was second in a heart breaker of a finish in the 6th at Aqueduct 11/21/09. Make History closed down the lane like a freight train and just missed in the photo to $500,000.00 sales grad Citizen's Arrest.

Make it two in a row for That Ol' Black Magic. Blackie as we call him, rallied down the lane, split foes and got up by a neck in a thrilling starter allowance at Hollywood Park. The nearly black son of Stormin Fever out of Marche Conclu has been a force to be reckoned with since stretching out following his debut at Santa Anita

Interpatation Stuns Gio Ponti in the Turf Classic G1 at Belmont

By Jason Shandler

Elliot Mavorah’s Interpatation pulled a shocker in the $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational (gr. IT) and did it in sensational fashion. The 7-year-old gelding was passed by Gio Ponti with a furlong remaining, then re-rallied on the heavy favorite to score a 43-1 upset Oct. 3 at Belmont Park.

Winless in his last 17 starts dating back to September 2007, Interpatation was allowed to coast through easy fractions in the 1 1/2-mile Turf Classic, but when a tracking Gio Ponti caught the longshot at the top of the lane it seemed as though he was running for second. But soon after being headed, the son of Langfuhr   came back on Gio Ponto, edging away under Robby Albarado until he scored a 1 3/4-length victory on the “soft” turf course. The final time was 2:41.22.

Remarkably, it was the first graded stakes win for Interpatation since he took the Palm Beach Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Gulfstream Park back in March 2005.

“It was great. Great!” said overjoyed trainer Bobby Barbara. “I was waiting for him one day to pick his head up and do it right. He did it right, on the perfect day. This horse made $700,000 the hard way, and now he’s over a million in one day!”

Meanwhile on the left coast Proud Hillbilly ran a huge race in breaking his maiden in his second start at Oak Tree for La Canada Stables and Trainer Jack Carava. Congratulations to all connections!

Multiple graded stakes winner Monterey Jazz appears to be back in top form. After his 3¼-length score in the American Handicap (G2) on Sunday at Hollywood Park, the most obvious question was, ‘Where does he go next?’ “We’ll keep our options open for Del Mar or possibly the Longacres Mile [Handicap (G3) on August 16] at Emerald Downs,” winning trainer Craig Dollase said. The Longacres Mile winner earns a starting
spot in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) via the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series.

The versatile five-year-old Thunderello horse has won from five furlongs to 11⁄8 miles with graded stakes wins on turf, dirt, and synthetic tracks. Monterey Jazz solidified his credentials as a contender for the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) with the American Handicap score, completing 11⁄8 miles on firm turf in 1:46.11.

With victories in the 2008 Strub Stakes on the synthetic surface at Santa Anita Park and the ’08 Texas Mile Stakes (G3) on the dirt main track at Lone Star Park, Monterey Jazz looms a serious threat for the Dirt Mile. Sidelined for seven months in 2008 with an injury, Monterey Jazz has pleased Dollase with how far he has come in less than nine months since his return to racing.

“He had a fracture of the hind foot so we gave him plenty of time off,” Dollase said. “It took him a while to get back into form. He had a couple soft turf courses over at Santa Anita, which he does not like. Now we had fast and firm. He’s the man now. He’s back.” Monterey Jazz dueled with Storm Military (Arg) through an opening quarter in :24.27 and opened a 21⁄2-length lead after a half-mile in 47.72. Unchallenged with a six-length advantage at the three-eighths pole, Monterey Jazz coasted to victory. Out of the Dynaformer mare Reefside, Monterey Jazz improved to eight wins in 19 career starts and boosted his earnings to $670,880 for owners A and R Stables and Class Racing Stable. He was bred in Kentucky by Danzel Brendemuehl.

BLACK HILLS was a $20,000 yearling purchase for Classic Bloodstock. He has a special place in our hearts overcoming a terrible sickness and becoming a top allowance horse in California before becoming a stakes star in New Mexico. Second in his first start two weeks back ROYALLY COOL lay second today pressing the pace then switching leads in the stretch to pull away decisively and win by three lengths.

6/20/ 09 - Classic Bloodstock training graduates Dark Eyes and Summer Trip both win today DARK EYES made the 5th race at Philadelphia a walk in the park besting her rivals by 81/4 lengths. By Jack Shinar

The 5-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Thunderello   ran out well past the wire for Baze.

Monterey Jazz returns in Cigar
By David Grening
OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Monterey Jazz was supposed to spend Memorial Day in New York, but a foot injury scrapped plans to run in the prestigious Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park.Instead, Monterey Jazz will now spend Thanksgiving in the Big Apple, making his return to the races in Saturday's Grade 1, $300,000 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct. Monterey Jazz was scheduled to arrive in New York on Wednesday following a cross-country flight from Southern California. When last seen, Monterey Jazz was establishing himself as one of the top milers in the nation with a dominant eight-length victory in the Grade 3 Texas Mile at Lone Star Park in April. His gaudy Beyer Speed Figure of 118 earned in that race had many anticipating his next start. But Monterey Jazz suffered a hind foot fracture in a workout at Hollywood Park before he was scheduled to ship for the Met Mile. After more than three months off, Monterey Jazz returned to trainer Craig Dollase's Hollywood Park barn in September. He returned to the work tab on Oct. 15 and has worked seven times since, including a sharp six-furlong drill from the gate in 1:10.80 last Friday."There are no other mile races in the country right now," Dollase said Tuesday by phone from Southern California. "We want to keep him at a mile. He's training lights-out, it's a Grade 1, the weights are right, the weather should be okay. We like the spot and how he's training, so we're going to go for it."David Flores, who is 4 for 4 aboard Monterey Jazz, is scheduled to come in for the ride. Monterey Jazz, a 4-year-old son of Thunderello, has won 4 of his last 5 starts dating back to Nov. 10, 2007. His only loss in that span was a 12th-place finish in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap, a race in which he set a blazing fast pace for 1 1/4 miles. He has won on turf, dirt, and synthetic. The presence of the front-running Monterey Jazz is not good news for Wanderin Boy and Storm Play, who look to be the other speed horses in the field.

Monterey Jazz's presence in the Cigar Mile sets up an interesting Beyer Speed Figure battle with Bribon, who also earned a 118 Beyer Figure in a one-mile allowance race earlier in the year. Only Commentator has earned a higher figure this year, a 119 in the Richter Scale at Gulfstream Park.

10/25/08 - New Zealander took his debut from gate to wire in the slop at Laurel today. A Classic Bloodstock weanling to two year old graduate, New Zealander was kept for our racing partnership, to resell at a later date.

Monterey Jazz, a Golden Gate maiden winner on the lawn last June, annexed a $40,000 optional claimer over the Fairplex main track in September. He completed the trifecta in a $62,500 optional claimer over the Santa Anita Cushion Oct. 26. Switching back to grass and stretching to a mile in his next two starts, he won an $80,000 optional claimer in wire-to-wire fashion at Hollywood Nov. 10, then added the GIII Sir Beaufort S. in front-running style Dec. 26. Seeking his third straight here, he broke on top, led by three lengths through a half mile in :45.89 and reported home a convincing winner. Favored Tiago rallied from last of eight to place second.
"He broke good and he was relaxed, but when we got to the [clubhouse] turn he felt those other horses coming to him and he took off, so I just let him," jockey David Flores said. "I think he can go a mile and a quarter, no problem. He's just a machine right now." According to trainer Craig Dollase, Monterey Jazz is possible for the Mar. 1 GI Santa Anita H. "He's really improved immensely, and hopefully we've got some bigger and better races down the road," Dollase said. "David didn't fight him at all and he trains this way, too. He's really a freak of nature. We obviously found the right key with him now. He probably wanted to stretch out all along and I just didn't know that, so we've got a brand new horse on our hands, and he's the real deal."
